Defeat the Winter Blahs

"I fear I've wasted all my sun, I fear I've wasted all my time. Everything is faded. Smiles are fabricated now. Held my eyes closed for too long." ~Fuel

We are extremely blessed to have on average 300 days of sun during most of the year in Colorado. When winter rolls through, Coloradans experience a huge contrast as most of our non-sunny days come all at once.

One of the many blessings of living in Colorado is also a curse as we spend more and more of our time indoors. The incandescent bulb is missing many of the color variances of the sun's natural color spectrum containing large amounts of yellow (stress-inducing) and decreased amounts of blue (calming), vital for proper neurological development of the parietal and frontal regions of the brain.

During the holidays we encounter many stressors on our bodies. Our friends, families, churches, schools, and social circles ask us to celebrate the holiday season with them which adds stress to our lives throughout an already self-inflicted stressful period. Often our exercise routines take a nose-dive, our eating habits become carb-loaded, and our minds become others-oriented. All of these factors are in themselves not terrible, but put them all into a 40-day period and we find extreme levels of self-inflicted stress and undue tension.

Also at this time we tend to hibernate in our warm homes, offices and cars. Those lunch time walks and evening dog necessities become farther and farther apart. The natural physiological tendency is to load up on food and begin to prepare for a tough season ahead. The problem is that we live in the 21st century. Starbucks, Krispie Kreme, Budweiser and Safeway Deli don't care about our lack of motivation. We tend to push push push through the season and come out the other end with a list of resolutions to keep us busy for several months trying to restore our health, weight and sanity.

Some tips for staying happy, healthy and reduce your stress this winter season:
  • Chiropractic - Of course! This not only aids your body's ability to properly regulate blood sugar, digestion, sleep cycles, menstruation, cancer, but it also helps restore range of motion and rehabilitating the body and brain after falls, ski accidents and other injuries.

  • Get plenty of exercise

  • Eye Lights - These wonderful devices help to balance brain activity when used in conjunction with chiropractic. They provide brain balancing stimulation to the less stimulated areas of the brain at any point during the day.

  • Light Therapy - Full spectrum light bulbs decrease depression, anxiety, tension, sleep disturbances, migraines, high blood pressure, sugar and starch craving, violence and agression, Seasonal Affective Disorder (SAD) and much more. They have also been shown to increase alertness, energy, productivity, calcium absorption, visual acuity, immune system function, academic performance, concentration and cooperation. Visit lightforhealth.com for more information.

  • Nutrition - Omega 3 Fish Oils (supports all cellular function and immune system support and neurological development), Protein (Increase cellular repair and neurological development), Symplex M/F (supports hormonal pathways), Min-Chex (Supports concentration and relaxation, is good for ADD and ADHD), Niacinamide B6 (supports neurology, aids in depression, vasodilation and fatty acid metabolism), St. Johns Wort (supports nervousness and nervous system function), Nevaton (helps with nervousness, concentration, anxiety and depression.)
With these tips, you can hopefully enjoy and stress-less and happy winter season.

Organic Food Facts

The biggest study ever into organic food – a four-year EU funded project called the Quality Low Input Food (QLIF) project – found that organic food is FAR more nutritious than ordinary produce, and can help improve your health and longevity. You're likely to hear more about this again, once they publish their findings in full, which is expected to occur by the end of this year.

Of the 43 different fruit and vegetable categories in the Guide to Pesticides, the following twelve foods had the lowest pesticide load when conventionally grown. Consequently, they are the safest conventionally grown crops to consume:

  • Broccoli
  • Eggplant
  • Cabbage
  • Banana
  • Kiwi
  • Asparagus
  • Sweet peas (frozen)
  • Mango
  • Pineapple
  • Sweet corn (frozen)
  • Avocado
  • Onion

This is where the EWG study of pesticide residue on produce really helps. Of the 43 different fruit and vegetable categories tested, these 12 fruits and vegetables had the highest pesticide load, making them the most important to buy or grow organic:

  • Peaches
  • Apples
  • Sweet bell peppers
  • Celery
  • Nectarines
  • Strawberries
  • Cherries
  • Lettuce
  • Grapes (imported)
  • Pears
  • Spinach
  • Potatoes

Conventionally-grown strawberries, in particular, were found to be highly toxic due to a poisonous blend of pesticides in a previous 2007 EU study as well.

But be VERY careful as the list above is for fruits and vegetables. Non-organic meats have far higher concentrations of pesticides than all of the fruits and vegetables. And the highest concentration of pesticides is actually in non-organic butter.

For example, this study found that:

  • Organic fruit and vegetables contain up to 40 percent more antioxidants
  • Organic produce had higher levels of beneficial minerals like iron and zinc
  • Milk from organic herds contained up to 90 percent more antioxidants

Intelligent Universe

"Those who disobey the laws of Heaven and Earth have a lifetime of calamities, while those who follow the laws remain free from dangerous illness."

--Huang Ti Nei Ching

Innately, we know what we need in our lives to be healthy and happy. The problems arise from our fast paced world and self-induced stress to achieve more. Out of this lifestyle we make the wrong choices on a daily basis. Each of us looks to understand these choices, when we must simply slow down and think about what each of us truly wants-- the big picture that depicts our life.

At Life Chiropractic we only wish to help you find your truths, you are the one who has to make the choices.

Decluttering Emotions

In our office we use a technique called Neuro-Emotional Technique (or NET). Last week we had a patient tell us that sometimes after his appointment that he goes home and has to throw out a bunch of stuff, essentially decluttering his physical space as he declutters his mental space. Emotions can cause us to hold onto all kinds of things!

Emotions are the most powerful link in your mind and help hold memory patterns together. Negative emotions from past trauma hold negative patterns in your body. NET can physically release the emotions from the body! Neuro-Emotional Complexes (or NECs) can cause negative patters such as self destructive behavior, insecurity, judgment, projection, feeling down, feeling overworked, etc. The process of an NET session neurologically resets the body's brain and energy systems. Releasing negative emotional patterns is the true power of NET.

This week we had a patient say "There are no lazy people, only NECs that keep them from being productive."

For more on NET, you can visit www.netmindbody.com or come in to our office for one of our talks or a free consultation.

Spring Cleaning for Our Bodies

Liver Detoxification & Weight Management Program

Going on the Purification Diet is a Commitment, but the results will make the effort worthwhile.

The diet focuses on what you eat. Your diet will include Standard Process Supplements, and whole foods that contain vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients which support all the major organ systems during purification. In addition the program contains foods that will help maintain a consistent, healthy weight.

This is a guideline, so be creative and have fun with choices. Try new foods, and discover new ways to enjoy eating. Purification may be a struggle, but remember what you are striving for, a healthier you.

Why Do I need purification?
AKA detoxification, helps your body remove natural toxins in your body and help maintain healthy weight.
Exposure to toxins daily:
Pollutants
Pesticides
Chemicals
Natural Cellular Waste Products

Leading to Conditions like:
Stuffy head
Fatigue or difficulty sleeping
Digestion and other GI problems
Food Cravings and Weight Gain
Reduced Mental Clarity
Low Libido

Approximately 80,000 synthetic chemicals registered in the U.S. The CDC reports hundreds of these chemicals are in our bodies. Research shows the degenerative effects of these on our immune, endocrine, nervous and reproductive systems.

External Toxins
Air/ Water Pollutants Caffeine Pesticides Cigarette Smoke Herbicides
Cosmetics Pharmaceuticals Heavy Metals Preservatives

Internal Toxins
House Cleaners Ammonia Carbon Dioxide Free Radicals

How do I determine my toxic load?
Your toxic load is the amount of toxins that your body needs to process. Answering this may begin to give you insight into your current toxic load.

Yes No Do you or have you eaten processed foods?
Yes No Do you or have you eaten non-organic fruits or vegetables?
Yes No Do you eat meat and poultry that are not free range?
Yes No Do you consume genetically altered food?
Yes No Do you or have you ever used artificial sweeteners?
Yes No Do you drink soda?
Yes No Do the foods you eat have preservatives, additives, dyes or
sweeteners added?
Yes No Do you eat fast foods and/or eat out regularly?
Yes No Do you charbroil or grill foods?
Yes No Do you drink coffee regularly?
Yes No Do you drink alcohol?
Yes No Do you drink tap water?

If the majority of your answers are “yes”, then it is likely that your diet contributes significantly to your toxic load. Beyond diet, many external toxins, such as perfumes, cleaners, and pollution, add to your load.

How do internal organs assist in purification?

Liver
  • Filters toxins
  • Aids the body in metabolizing fat, protein and carbohydrates
  • Helps transform many toxins into harmless agents
Kidneys
  • Filter out waste and excess fluid from the blood
  • Regulate and release the right balance of sodium, phosphorus, and potassium for the body to function properly
Small Intestine
  • Digests food so that nutrients can be absorbed into the blood and transported to the liver
  • Provides a barrier that blocks toxins from the rest of the body
Large Intestine
  • Absorbs water and electrolytes, forming waste that is excreted from the body
  • Produces antibodies for gastrointestinal health
  • Contains bacterium that create fatty acids and some vitamins for additional nutritional support
